95 points, “A true tawny masterpiece.” – Decanter Magazine But this Tawny Port isn’t one of those tiny masterpieces you might hang in gallery. This is a monumental three litre Jeroboam; it’s the Sistine Chapel of Tawny Port. Over the decade that it matures in oak casks, the red colour of this wine fades and it becomes increasingly mellow and nutty. The Fonseca 10 Year Old Tawny Port displays an autumnal combo of bonfire smoke, toasted nuts, toffee and Nutella crêpes, layered on top of which are notes of dried red berries, creamy marzipan, moist rolling tobacco and Madeira. Smooth and seamless, this Port can be served with everything from your salted nut nibbles to the most potent of cheeseboards, and from a pâté starter to a pecan or banoffee pie for dessert. And all that goodness is trapped inside this huge bottle beneath a wax seal, and then tucked neatly into a wooden gift box for real wow factor. Owned by The Fladgate Partnership who also own Taylor’s and Croft, Fonseca has a cult following. It remains the choice of those in the know, maybe precisely because it has a slightly lower profile than its stable mates. But this is very much a Port House firing on all cylinders; the aromatic quality of their wine is second to none.
